Drain Fly: Identification, Facts & Control
Latin Name: Family Psychodidae
Physical Appearance: Around 1/16-inch long with light-colored wings and a tan or light grey body. Both the body and wings have long hairs, which make the fly have a fuzzy look. The wings tend to be folded on its body in a roof-like disposition when the fly is at rest.
Habitat: You can find these flies in the kitchen, basement, or bathroom in a home setting. They come out mostly at night and are not known to bite. Interestingly, drain flies are incapable of human disease transmission.
Diet: Sewage and organic matter.
Reproduction: Drain flies lay eggs virtually anywhere that has decomposing organic material. They lay their eggs in irregular formations as small mass clumps. When conditions are right, a week is all it takes for the flies to traverse one generation. However, the average time that this takes is normally two to three weeks.
Basic Drain Fly Facts: Diptera psychodidae, otherwise known as the common drain fly, has become a pivotal aspect in many ecosystems that are water-based. Despite this fact, fly control is a challenge for most homeowners, particularly if the population experiences an exponential growth. Drain flies are easily found in areas that are damp and coated with organic material that contain nutrients. The fly name points to the fact that they are found in storm drains and houses. Another place where they are found is compost piles and areas where there are logs that are undergoing decomposition.
Drain Fly Life Cycle: The eggs produced by drain flies hatch and produce larvae that is almost translucent and white in color. It is common to have these larvae survive oxygen levels that are low and extremes in terms of temperatures. Sometimes, they are found underneath organic material that is undergoing biodegradation. These flies are thought to be useful for the environment, due to the fact that they go through compounds that are known to cause blockages in drain clogs. The larvae possess very strong jaws that are capable of slicing through dense slime layers and build-up.
Drain fly larvae undergo the pupa life cycle, after which they come out as mature adults, possessing six legs, antennae and a pair of wings. Adult drain flies normally live for two weeks, although adults that have been recently hatched replace them fast. Another name for adult drain flies is moth flies, owing to their appearance, which is small in size and possessing large wings that are ovoid. They also have protruding antennae.
Controlling Drain Flies: The best way to get rid of these flies is to get rid of the site in which they breed. This is the organic material that is found in the drain. If the flies are found in a house setting, chances are there is a clogged or slow-moving drain. Locate the drain and proceed to thoroughly clean it. If you have flies in the house, you have to keep in mind, however, that liquid drain cleaner will not help you to entirely get rid of these flies.
