How pesticide affect human health ?
In Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the dangers of pesticide exposure have only been recently uncovered. In 2010 and 2011, the Poison and Drug Information Center (PDIC) at the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD) reported as much as 200 poison-related cases, of which 27 cases were caused by accidental pesticide exposure, either via inhalation or ingestion.
Reports say that out of the 25 cases of non-fatal exposure to pesticides in 2010, three cases led to kidney failure. However, it seems that children are the most common victims of pesticide poisoning. Only recently, a set of five-month old triplets, two-boys and a girl, spent days in the hospital following pesticide inhalation.
Pesticides enter the body via three routes: through the skin, ingestion and inhalation, and the severity of effects of pesticides on the overall health condition of the individuals vary depending on the system involved as well as the manner and duration of exposure.
Pesticides may lead to skin or eye irritation, may cause cancer and can seriously impair the nervous, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. These manifestations are usually congruent to prolonged pesticide exposure or may be due to a single, yet large-dose pesticide exposure.

However, these can be easily prevented if only people were informed about the proper use of pesticides. As such, during the 2011 Poison Prevention Week in Abu Dhabi, the HAAD released the following guidelines on proper pesticide handling:
- Pesticide users are advised to verify license validity of the pesticide company. A list may be obtained from the Center of Waste Management in Abu Dhabi.
- Pesticide handlers must always be prepared for any kind of emergency. In cases of vomiting, shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, weakness, etc., affected individuals must be taken to the emergency department the soonest time possible.
- Pesticide users must take the responsibility to inform other members of the household about the items and areas where pesticide was applied.
- Also, handlers are encouraged to identify the pesticide's active ingredient and to find out if such needs special handling.
These steps and wearing proper protective equipment will significantly reduce pesticide-related incidents. For that reason, the use of pesticides by inexperienced individuals is highly discouraged. Only those with proper training are qualified to handle such dangerous substances.
